Floral Design FAQs
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for a floral designer was $33,160 in 2021.* Average salary can vary based on your education, experience, credentials, where you work, and even the state in which you live.
Floral designers can often find steady work during seasons or holidays such as wedding season, Christmas, and Easter. Employment for floral designers in grocery store floral departments can be expected to increase as more customers appreciate the convenience of picking arrangements out on the go while florist shops could see a decline in customers over the next decade due to online ordering.
A good floral designer can blend creativity, adaptability, and customer service skills to assist clients in creating the perfect arrangement for any event or celebration. Additionally, a successful floral designer will have in-depth knowledge of plants, from foliage to flowers, how to care for them properly, and know when certain flowers are in season and how that can affect pricing for arrangements.
While it is certainly possible to become a self-taught florist, earning a diploma or certificate in floral design with online learning can help you qualify for more job opportunities. If you want to start a career working for an event planner, hotel design staff, or in a grocery store floral department, having documented training on your resume can help you stand out from other applicants.
